Citynews – on 9thJune, Former Miss Universe Thailand Weluree Disayabut, nicknamed Fai, announced that she would relinquish her title during a press conference in The Renaissance Bangkok Hotel.
In a press conference this afternoon hosted by the Miss Universe Thailand committee, Fai claimed it was her decision to give up the crown after being subjected to insults and abuse that has affected her and her family emotionally.
Fai has received large amounts of abuse online after her strong opinions about the redshirts were exposed by the media.
“It is my own decision” Fai said tearfully. “I don’t regret it at all. At first, my family was happy that I won, but when society did not agree, all of our happiness was gone. My mother cannot sleep and neither can I.”
According to the Miss Universe Thailand beauty contest’s regulations, if the Miss Universe Thailand winner is unable to fulfill her obligations, the first runner-up will assume the title and perform the duties on behalf of the Miss Universe Thailand. In this case the runner-up is much loved Pimbonkod Chankaew, nicknamed Ellie, a Thai-American who received a lot of support prior and after the event.
