CityNews – Today seems to be the worst day of the year thus far when it comes to Chiang Mai’s smog levels. Doi Suthep has disappeared from sight, residents are complaining of itchy eyes and sinuses, and local dust measurements have reached dangerous levels.

According to measurements taken this morning at Chiang Mai Provincial Hall, dust levels are currently at 163 micrograms per cubic metre. At Yupparaj Wittayalai School, levels measured in at 181 micrograms of dust per cubic metre.
The health safety standard says that clean air should have no more than 120 micrograms of dust per cubic metre, meaning the current levels – at 43-61 over the safe level – are considered a public safety hazard.
Doctors warn residents to take care of themselves, avoid outdoor activities, and wear a mask whenever possible.
Local authorities claim they are closely watching the situation and warn residents not to burn anything during this time, as it is against the law.
