The Farangutans played the Chiang Mai Select team – a team comprised of the city’s best international school students – in May. On what turned out to be possibly the hottest day of the year, and for a long time in Chiang Mai, both teams struggled just to keep upright. The ‘old guys’ scored first, only for the Select team to equalise in the second half of the game. 1-1.

Chiang Mai Softball League will be playing softball on Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m. on the Payap University softball field. Players of all ages and abilities welcome.

On May 1st and 2nd the Chiang Mai Tigers (changed to ‘Tigers’ because of the difficulty in pronouncing the Thai word for tiger) attended the Pattaya 10’s rugby tournament after a year’s absence. Drawn in the pool of death they lost the first game 7-0 to a strong AIA Legends team but then against all odds they then went on to win the following two games against Thai Barbarians 1sts and the Southerners, 14-7 and 21-0 respectively. With other games going their way they managed to top the group in the pool stages. On the second day the Tigers beat the developing Thai nation team ‘Young Blood’ 21-0 to make it to The Cup semi final. The match was a hard-fought game but showing true character the Tigers won it 10-7 to send them into The Cup final to play the Legends.
The Legends, who are made up of Thai international players, had a ghost of an outside half that the Tigers could not deal with, this reflected in the score: 19-0 to the Legends. The Tigers would like to thank all their sponsors and Sandy of the UN Irish pub for making the tour happen and would like to invite anyone willing to sponsor or play or support for future tours to speak to Sandy at the UN Irish. There are plans to tour Cambodia 10’s and to return and go one better next year at Pattaya 10’s.
