Snacking is in our culture and here are three of the sweetest most delicious snack shops in our sugary city.
Namlai Lhai
Mouth-watering is a literal thing. When we think of things delicious, those glands are simply uncontrollable. This new candy shop in the heart of Kad Na Mor, on Huay Kaew Road at the front of CMU, is aptly named “mouth-watering” in Thai. The colourful shop is packed from floor to ceiling with sweet candies, gummy bean dispensers, marshmallows and cola bottles. The pick ’n’ mix style brings brand new options to those looking for that perfect combo of sweet and sour as they fill up with gummy bears and bitter Chinese plum boiled sweets. The price starts at just 25 baht per 100 grams, and there are even special packets you can fill up, perfect for a birthday gift or romantic gesture. (There are plenty of dentists in the city, so you can deal with the fallout later.)
Open 5.30pm – 11pm

Taiyaki Tung Hotel
The trendy fish-shaped glazed pastries called taiyaki from Japan are making it to Chiang Mai in shoals. If you haven’t tried one before, you need to catch up with the trend and head on over to Taiyaki Tung Hotel, a small roadside shop opposite the Star Work Building on Tung Hotel Road, and tuck in! Stuffed with various flavours, from black sesame to curried chicken or cheesy delights with options of ham or sausage, they are just 35 to 40 baht a pop — three for 100 baht. You can choose from the display cabinet or call ahead to get freshly made-to-order taiyakis too.
Open 10am – 7pm (Closed Sundays)
