Fill Your Belly

 |  July 5, 2016

This month’s 25th anniversary issue has made some hungry stomachs in the offices of Citylife rumble, so we’ve taken the time to fill up on some delicious local comfort food.

yoksod

Yok Sod Noodles
Yok Sod, which translates to ‘slurping from a bowl’, is exactly what you may find yourself doing at this incredible noodle shop. With a simple menu but with lots of options, you can easily fill up on the tom yum or the nam tdok noodle soups that are served in three sizes, small (15 baht) special (40 baht) or jumbo (50 baht). Crispy pork rinds and other additions are found at your table, though the jumbo bowl is guaranteed to have you filled to the brim. Just choose your noodle type — soup, meat (pork or beef), innards…or not…and tuck straight in. Get a bowl of the pork bone soup on the side for just 30 baht as a contrast and then kill the spiciness with some kanom touy at the end.

Open 9am – 3pm
Road 1001 next to Honda Paradise Showroom (Lake Ville Park 2 junction)

Samurai Kitchen
Japanese food looks like it is taking over the city! Thai people simply love it. For many of us all it can sometimes be tough with a small budget to get good Japanese food. So look no further. Samurai Kitchen is serving up a large menu of Japanese food, all at just 59 baht a dish. Sushi, salmon sashimi, tempura…all you can imagine. They even do Japanese style cakes at just 39 baht a piece. Decorated in the style of the Shōwa Jidai era, it’s like stepping into a Japanese home as you leave Thailand behind. The chef has over 10 years of experience, so expect high quality food regardless of the price.

Baan Ched Yod
One of our staff’s favourite lunch spots — well, it is the closest — is Baan Ched Yod, which has recently reopened across the road from its old location. It sells all sorts of kamom jeen (rice noodles) with the traditional northern, central and southern Thai sauces you would expect from a self-respecting kanom jeen shop: fish curry, sweet and sour beans curry, jungle fish curry, fish curry with coconut milk, green curry pork balls, red curry chicken and north red curry with ground pork and tomatoes along with vegetable side dishes. There is also a good dessert selection; fruits, som tam and other bits and pieces all for a ridiculously reasonable 79 baht a head. Herbal drinks and water are also inclued.

Open 10am – 4pm
Kaew Nawarat Road, Soi 3, Wat Gate District
