• Whistling Dixie

I recently read in the Bangkok Post that the ‘QuietBangkokGroup’ (www.quietbangkok.org) had started a campaign titled ‘Whistle Free Zone.’ This was to make people aware of noise in Bangkok, especially whistles blown by security staff at hotels, condominiums and office blocks.

This campaign has been so successful that management at many of these places has provided their guards with torch-lit batons, instead of the whistles and the group has provided the guards with free training in their use.

I wonder if such a campaign would be successful in Chiang Mai?

• The Facts about the King of Rock

Love Elvis, Love Lek Presley… but…someone has got their facts wrong. The famous photo with the King and Queen is in 1960, not 1959, on the set of ‘G I Blues’ not ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and Elvis was sitting with his co-star Juliette Prowse and Their Majesties, not Pricilla Presley.

So nought out of three for that one – but there were four people in the photo so I guess half a point for that? Apart from that a great article of a talented ETA who I have seen in BKK as well as up here.

Another point – there are also no Elvis fan clubs in Thailand that I know of – so not sure what Lek’s referring to there. I am hoping to set one up in Chiang Mai at some stage as I have ‘Official’ backing from Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE), Graceland, which organises fan clubs around the world – if anyone is interested helping me maybe they could contact me through Citylife?

Pedantic I know, but us Elvis fans are like that – we like accuracy when discussing the foremost entertainer the world has ever known.

• BDSM

Odd jobs indeed. I never knew Chiang Mai had a dominatrix studio. Is it legal? Typical of Citylife to feature the story, shocking, but, then hey, why not? We all have a bit of naughty in us I suppose.

• True Colours

So, can I take out the primary coloured clothes from my wardrobe and wear them again? Is it safe now?

• Single and Sad

I had such great times at the Bollywood Night and the Latin/Salsa night which Citylife organised. [Ed. The events were organised by Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, we worked with them on publicity.] As much fun as I always have at your ladies’ nights as well. I was talking to some friends and we thought we would get in touch together and ask if Citylife would, pretty please, organise a singles night sometime. We girls have a hard time finding decent men to date or just to go to the movies with. Please consider this and help out the forlorn and single here in Chiang Mai.

[Ed. Oddly enough we have had a few such inquiries of late and have been thinking about it. If anyone is interested please contact us at info@chiangmaicitylfe.com and perhaps give us some ideas of what you would like us to organise. As we have no experience organising singles events, any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

• Fun with Semantics

I just read Citylife (June issue) and have always enjoyed Citylife magazine especially the Editorial page. I know the meaning in Thai of these words: corruption(©éÍÃÒÉ®ÃìºÑ§ËÅǧ), sustainability (ÂÑè§Â×¹), maintenance (¨ÃÃâŧ), and empowerment (àµÔÁ¾Åѧ). But I would like to ask you the meaning in Thai of some other words. I have been struggling with the right meaning for 40 years. Please help. The words are integrity, sophisticated and irony.
