2016 – A Win For Wildlife

Well, that’s it for another year. A year in which there were some terrible losses, and some even more distressing victories. Yet there was one win that, as 2016 came to a close, cannot have failed to perk everybody up a bit, and that was David Attenborough returning with ‘Planet Earth II’ to prove that the world we inhabit remains an extraordinarily fabulous place.

Editorial: January 2017

The year’s most empty promises are being made as you read this; with people all over the world resolving to better themselves and their lives. In spite of an avalanche of empirical evidence to the contrary, we somehow believe that January the 1st is some kind of magical reset button that can will us to achieve feats the previous 364 days failed to actualise.

Don’t Open The Castle Door You May Never Come Out

“It’s only ten minutes, I wouldn’t worry about it too much,” grinned Omri Gadasi, the owner of a lesser known, but largely feared, attraction in Chiang Mai. We stood nervously in the reassuringly bright lobby as doors opened, beckoning us into the dark, dank rooms of The Castle. With false bravado and a few nervous giggles, we stepped cautiously inside. Bang! The door slammed shut behind us with finality, and we heard the click of the lock turning behind us. A cackle sounded from deep within the mist from the other side of the room. Our hearts began to pump rapidly…

7 movies that were filmed in Chiang Mai

Thanks to The Beach (2000) and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) Hollywood and the whole world knows that Thailand offers some marvellous locations to shoot a good movie. Our humble Chiang Mai has also had a taste of Hollywood and became home to many different national and international film sets. So here are 7 movies you may or may not know were shot in Chiang Mai.

Watering Holes

Many of us enjoy a wee tipple now and then and here are some great new/newly renovated venues to check out this month.

The Rise of Thai Women in Tech

When we think of iconic figures that have worked, or are working, at the apex of the computer tech industry, for the most part it is men’s names that populate our thoughts. The industry is seen as a masculine domain, and if you look at the ratio of women-to-men employed, or holding leadership positions, within the tech milieu you see a vast disproportion in male to female employees; from developers to CEOs, jobs in the tech industry are traditionally filled by men.

The First Drip: How our Cofee Cult(ture) Began

Akha Ama, Ristr8to, Wawee, Doi Chang…these are all household names in Chiang Mai, and known for being at the forefront of our exploding coffee culture.

Keep Healthy

It can be hard to keep healthy, especially over the indulgent Christmas and New Year period, so why not start the year with a check-up and treat your body to some healthy love and care.

Sweets, Spices and Serenity

Yes, we have more great food to recommend this month…it just never stops does it? If you have a sweet tooth, a craving for heat or a yen for romance, give these venues a go.

Happy Glamper

Despite the cool winter months and fresh misty mornings, most of us still see camping as something that sounds like a good idea in theory, but simply too much hassle to indulge in. The hot midday sun still turns the flimsy nylon pod into a makeshift sauna, and those darned mosquitoes always find a way inside, no matter how many layers there are to protect you. As a Brit, there was nothing better than heading out into the woods with a few friends, starting a small fire and pitching a tent in the wild woods of southwest England, as your breath mists in front of your eyes. Here in Thailand, that cosiness is lost thanks to the tropical climate, dense forests, and fear or slithery and creepy crawlies.
