We Thais are not known for our activism. Whether it’s the expectation and acceptance of karmic balancing acts to come, the lackadaisical sabai sabai attitude, the hierarchical social structure which attempts to keep one firmly in place, a long history of oppression of alternative voices or a lack of education, it is pretty clear that social activism is still in its relative infancy in this country. But when our buttons are pushed hard enough and long enough, when things get lua thon (beyond bearable), we somehow pull it together, get out of our hammocks and salas and say ENOUGH! And for Chiang Mai, during my lifetime at least (and politics aside), it has always been about one thing: Doi Suthep.

The Heart Warming Story of Warm Heart Foundation

“What you must understand is, we’re not a normal family,” said Michael Shafer during a visit to the Warm Heart Foundation, found in the mountains of Phrao. Although featured before in Citylife, we have never spent time looking at the foundation as a whole, focusing mainly on their environmental efforts.

Legacy of a White Elephant’s Footsteps

If you have been paying any attention recently, you will see that our city has been dressed up in green ribbons. Chiang Mai is fighting, and the people are taking action on behalf of their sacred and beloved mountain, Doi Suthep. Chiang Mai’s activists have called upon judicial members to move out of the controversial housing estate nearing completion at its foothills, and the courts are stubbornly resisting the people’s demands, using law as a shield against cultural and environmental outrage. It’s hard not to notice that Doi Suthep has been at the centre of the news recently. So, let’s get to know Doi Suthep and figure out what all the fuss is about.

Coffee Galore!

If you thought our coffee lists were soon to be exhausted, think again. Here are three more coffee shops to add to the never-ending list of caffeine hubs in our city.

The New Scene is Green

In a country where systems for everyday sustainability are often lacking — it is clear that the concept is not only achievable, but also turning out to be a highly rewarding business concept. Here are a few examples of these green brands and the innovative individuals behind them.

Meet the Northern MasterChef Winners

Over the past few months, Thai food fans have been on the edge of their seats as the twenty eager contestants of this year’s MasterChef Thailand competition were whittled down to just one. The show (an international sensation, now spanning 57 countries) which originated in the UK way back in 1990, is more than just a competitive TV show but a quest to find the best amateur cooks in each nation. The winners of the competitions often end up running their own restaurants, some working in Michelin starred restaurants, or even eventually becoming Michelin starred chefs, while many others have forged careers as successful authors and critics. Basically winning provides a great career leapfrog for any aspiring chef and is a huge deal.

Little Japan

Chiang Mai maybe some 4,000 kms away from Japan, but that in no way means you can’t get your Nippon fix right here. Be it food, shopping or tea, this city has it all.
