10 March 2020 – Mr. Pratthana Leelapanang, AIS’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, said “We are delighted in the occasion that GSMA, the association of telecommunications network service provider with more than 800 members worldwide, has certified AIS for being the first and only 5G network operator in Thailand, which is available for Thais to officially use commercial 5G service. This set Thailand as the first country to successfully provide 5G service on mobile phones in Southeast Asia.

“On 21 February 2020, AIS paid for the first division of 2600 MHz spectrum and received a license to use the 2600 MHz frequency to provide 5G services officially as the first and only operator in the industry. On the same day, after receiving the license for only half an hour, AIS can start the 5G network in all regions across the country to be the Official 1st 5G Network in Thailand as well as showing powerful capabilities of the AIS 5G network by showing SpeedTest, streaming 4K video, and video calling from major cities in all 5 regions throughout Thailand, including the North region at the Thapae Gate in Chiang Mai province, the South region at the Monument of Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon in Phuket province, the Northeast region at Lan Yamo in Nakhon Ratchasima province, the Eastern region at Bali Hai Peninsula, Pattaya in Chonburi province, and the Central region at Phra Pathommachedi in Nakhon Pathom province. Furthermore, AIS is moving forward to join forces with the government and industry sector to bring benefits of 5G to support work such as robots to assist the public sector deal with the COVID-19 virus, testing the use of 5G in the cargo transportation, controlling cranes to lift containers remotely at the Hutchison Ports at Laem Chabang Port, Sriracha District, Chonburi Province. AIS is also the first to rollout 5G International Roaming service which is set to radically transform the connected experiences of tourists and business travelers beginning with Swisscom in Switzerland, Etisalat in the United Arab Emirates, and soon with China Unicom in China and SK Telecom in South Korea too.
