Chiang Dao villagers fear sinkholes as water levels rise unexpectedly

People in two villages in Chiang Dao’s Muang Na Sub-district have been voicing concerns over fresh water rising from the ground, drowning their cornfields and creating a lake where there was none before.

Following an investigation by Chiang Mai University’s Geological Science Department, this has been a direct result of recent heavy rains, which have expanded underground holes, finding escape with new cracks and weaknesses in the earth and stone layers. They warn of the possibility of dangerous sink holes should water levels recede and promise to come back to do a more comprehensive study to assess danger.
