Following Governor Nirat Pongsittithavorn’s inspection of the city today, it has been reported that while there are some visible cracks to the white pagoda at Wat Chedi Luang, as well as to its viharn, all damages are to the recent plaster and not to the foundation of these structures. The governor will discuss with the temple and the Fine Arts Department as to how to repair the damage.
The pagoda, which is 640 years old, suffered damages during an earthquake in 1545, which reduced the 80 metres tall pagoda to its current height of around 60 metres.
Eight sites have been inspected and assessed to be damaged, though according to authorities, they are superficial and will be repaired in due course.
They are:
Wat San Mapap, in Mae Pu Kha subdistrict, with a cracked sala.
The Fine Arts Department says that they expect many more reports of damages in the days and weeks to come, but are ready to do the work to repair all damages.
