Following the announcement this week by Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra that she will study the effects of a potential lifting of alcohol bans between 2pm-5pm as well as on religious holidays, CityNews visited some bars along Loi Koran road, and found some very excited business owners.

Along the Loi Kroh road sits around 30 bars and restaurants which rely on alcohol sales, one 66 year old bar owner said, “The vast majority of our clients are tourists who don’t have a clue about the alcohol bans. They get very put out when told they can’t drink during certain times.”

Another owner next door added, “My farang clients tend to come in the morning and sit around all day drinking beer. It doesn’t make sense that they have to stop for three hours in the afternoon. Business will certainly boom in the area if this ban is lifted as we lose a lot of money due to the time and date bans.”

Thailand is hoping to promote ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025’ as its theme this year and the regulations on alcohol, put in place in 1972, may not fall in line with new policies to strengthen the economy, said the prime minister.
