After ten very successful years, Akyra Manor Hotel, Nimmanhaemin’s crown jewel of a hotel, has been rebranded as Amanor Hotel. As part of this rebranding, its popular Italics restaurant has had an entire face and kitchen lift and is now called Lumi, its glittering lights bringing not just glamour to the neighbourhood but an expanded and updated menu—which has thankfully retained our old favorites!
Most people in Chiang Mai may know Italics as one of the best pizza restaurants in the city (over the pandemic the hotel was selling a mind-boggling 1,000 pizzas per week!), but lovers of Italian cuisine know it as a destination for some fabulous modern Italian as well as intriguing fusion Thai-Italian fare (who doesn’t love their beef cheek khao soy ravioli?!).
Lumi officially opened its doors, and kitchen, last week with a glittery event which featured some memorable dishes.
Being a hotel, its solid menu runs the gamut from indulgent breakfasts, light lunches to fine dining dinners. Chef Thanongsak ‘Prince’ Maneegard presented guests at the opening dinner with a delightful feast of burrata brioche with a velvety creamy burrata on a toasted brioche paired with local Japanese tomatoes, fresh basil and some premium olive oil and balsamic. This was followed by the absolutely delicious khao soi prawns which saw wonton-like wrapped braised prawns and ricotta ravioli in a broth of classic khao soy. We then were given a choice of falling off the fork wagyu short ribs with pillowy gnocchi or falling off the fork snow cod fish, all perfectly cooked and served with a seafood risotto with generous bites of squid and prawns. There was also a roasted cauliflower option, but we were too busy with the Wagyu and fish to sample it!
The meal ended with a classic tiramisu.
If you love modern Italian cuisine, then make sure you make your way to Lumi.
