Chiang Mai is still choked by smoke from forest fires. The PM 2.5 level has exceeded safe levels in 25 districts for a total of 37 days now since January 1st 2025. Ban On School in Chiang Dao was found to have the worst PM2.5 level with 600 micrograms per cubic meter while other areas were choked by PM2.5 dust, measured at 100-200 micrograms per cubic meter, which exceed the standard and have a significant impact on health.
Chiang Mai Municipality is using water trucks and spraying a fine mist of water around the city and Chang Phuak Gate to reduce the toxic dust and heat.
Water mist is sprayed 4 times a day, with 16,000 liters of water. The spraying points will be rotated to the areas with a large number of residents and tourists. However, forest fires have spread widely in many areas. From the latest report, 1,544 fire hot spots were found in 17 northern provinces, while Chiang Mai has 123 fire hot spots spread in many districts.
