With the upcoming nationwide elections slated to be held on the 14th of May this year, following the 25th house of representative’s four year term limit, the Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institution has begun issuing ID cards for soon-to-be released prisoners so that they can vote.
Yesterday Chiang Mai Municipality took machines to the Women’s Correctional Institute so that new ID cards can be issued to 267 prisoners. Of that number, 205 had lost their ID cards, 55 had cards which had run out, and seven which had damaged cards.
The director of the institute told CityNews that ID cards are essential for all Thais, in that it can be used to get medical help, gain employment, etc.
