CityNews – Chiang Mai is expected to have an operational light rail transit system in 2027.
The Chiang Mai administration announced the plans for the proposed light rail transit system on November 26th. The research has been conducted by the Office of Traffic and Transport Policy and Planning, which was recently concluded in October this year. The light rail transit system was first proposed in May last year and this mega project is reportedly expected to cost around 100 billion baht. The project will be financed through public-private partnerships under the authority of Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA).
MRTA revealed that the environmental impact assessment will begin early next year before being presented to the cabinet. By 2020, the project will be open to private investors to bid on and the construction will begin in the following year, estimated to take 69 months. The plan is to open the light rail transit system by 2027.
