CityNews – 30th March 2016, villagers living along the Mae Kha Canal, an ancient canal which runs through parts of the city, have lodged complaints to authorities as well as to Chiang Mai News newspaper following unbearable smells.
“So much garbage and waste is dumped into the canal by selfish people,” said Kornchirarat Theerachotchaimanee, a villager who is affected. “We are willing to pay for this to be cleaned up,” he stated, saying that the Fa Mai community (Suriwongse Road, near Wualai Road) had had enough.
Citylife has been reporting on the Mae Kha Canal’s pollution issues since 2000, but authorities appear to be unable to find a long term solution.
