Agriculture is probably Chiang Mai’s most significant business sector.
Northern Thailand is blessed with fertile soils, high rainfall (for part of the year) and plenty of sunshine. They say you can plant a pencil in Chiang Mai and it will grow. That’s not entirely true, but it is the perfect recipe for crops of all kinds.
Rice is ubiquitous, and paddy fields are everywhere, but also other staples are grown here too. Tea and coffee plantations are now well established, producing high-quality products that are fast gaining a worldwide reputation.
Fruit and vegetables are grown in rich abundance for both domestic consumption and export. There are also tentative explorations into whether Northern Thailand can become a centre for growing commercial cannabis as you will read in articles in these pages.
