Chiang Mai recently welcomed Martin Sutherland OBE, an internationally renowned cultural advisor with vast experience in developing Creative Cities. The visit marked a significant milestone in the ongoing Chiang Mai Festival City initiative, aimed at transforming the city into a global hub for arts, culture, and creativity.

Over the course of his visit, Martin engaged with a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Governor’s Office, local government agencies, educational institutions, business, tourism sectors, and community arts and culture groups. Each meeting highlighted Chiang Mai’s unique cultural assets and the aspirations of its people to foster collaboration and create a sustainable, world-class festival city.

“Chiang Mai is brimming with potential,” said Martin Sutherland. “Its rich cultural heritage, dynamic creative industries, and strong community spirit make it an ideal destination for an international festival city and it’s clear that there is a real appetite for making that happen.”

Supported by contributions from multiple local businesses and funders, including a generous grant from the British Council, the advisory visit provided an invaluable opportunity for key stakeholders to learn about best practices and approaches that could be helpful in Chiang Mai’s journey.

Ben Svasti MBE, British Honorary Consul, remarked on the importance of the visit: “Having someone of Martin’s calibre here has been hugely helpful. His insights and guidance have sparked important conversations and given us ideas for a roadmap that will help bring together Chiang Mai’s diverse sectors.”

The British Council’s support, alongside that of local partners, underscores the growing recognition of Chiang Mai’s potential to emerge as a leading cultural destination in the region. Alex Soulsby, Creative Director at Prem International School highlighted the impact of Martin’s visit on the city’s younger generation. “This initiative is not just about festivals; it’s about creating long-term opportunities for arts and cultural engagement that benefit the whole community and future generations”.

The insights gathered during Martin’s visit will guide the Governor and his office in shaping a strategic framework that, among other things, emphasizes inclusion, community engagement, economic growth, and international collaboration. “Chiang Mai’s journey toward becoming a festival city celebrates the creative spirit of its people”
