Comedara, set in Wat Gate area, has been serving fine Thai cuisine and original Lanna recipes for nearly twenty years. Recently, Comedara has undergone an update, modernising the restaurant, and turning it into a Modern Lanna style eatery filled with Chiang Mai wooden furniture, clean simple lines and walls featuring stunning local art. You can sit in the cool air-conditioned interior or in the outdoor-adjacent zone where cool air blows from the Ping River.
Pimprapai ‘Noi’ Wongtada has taken her family’s beloved recipes, and updated them with great new produce, flavours and techniques, adding her own legacy to her family’s culinary traditions.
The legendary ‘Hinlay’ pork stew from grandma’s recipe, long served in a hot pot, is a must try, especially now that Noi has come back from a visit to Morocco inspired to serve her stew in a tajine instead of a local hot pot. The reason for this is so that the food doesn’t lose its moisture, retaining all of its rich spices and flavours when served.
The rice vermicelli with Northern Thai curry sauce and pork (nam ngiew) or the Northern noodle creamy soup with chicken/Angus beef (khao soy) are both must-try northern delicacies, especially with the khao soy dish coming with a special Comedara twist: served with Chiang Da leaf flour noodles, an award-winning creation using native leaves, which is a must try. And another menu highlight recommended is the Thai peach in syrup for desserts, washed down by a long a juice soda.
The famous Kad Luang fried pork on the bone served with nam-prik-dang chili dip and wild plum is a perfect nibble to accompany any drink or meal, as is the spicy grilled eggplant salad with crab meat and minced pork, all marinated and topped with a herb-infused spicy sauce.
Want to push your tastebuds and try something you have likely never tried before? Well then definitely order the Northern style stir fried freshwater swamp algae, not the sexiest sounding dish, but an absolute rare hard-to-find local delight, filled with mineral goodness. The texture and taste of the algae echoes that of shrimp roe, while the added curry sauce serves it up as a perfect bite when paired with jasmine or sticky rice. Other rare northern produce include the controversial but ever-so-delicious puffball mushrooms which can be served in a curry paste mixed with chicken and local veggies, or in a clear chilli soup with red ant eggs…if you dare!
The desserts and drinks also hold their own here and you can try out all sorts of traditional recipes since as the fresh coconut milk look lan plum seed, a lovely refreshing dessert, perfectly washed down by the longan juice soda, the kaffir lime juice soda or the Vieng Ping rose juice.
A great place to take out of town guests to really enjoy a culinary adventure, a perfect venue for a family or friend gathering, so you can order as many dishes as you want to share and try them all! Or even just a romantic spot by the river for a tete a tete.
