Tucked away down the leafy sois of Wat Umong is one of Chiang Mai’s most well kept secrets—Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai.

Aleenta Retreat enjoys the distinction of being one of only six hotels in our Northern city to have received a coveted Michelin key; being awarded one key for its excellence last year.

Oozing authentic local flavour, Aleenta Retreat is all about contemporary Thai and Lanna architecture, a great range of health and wellness activities, impeccable service (with a Thai smile) and of course some of the best food you will find in the city.

The Garden Restaurant, helmed by Chef Komkrich ‘Arm’ Issarajinda who has amassed decades of kitchen experience under his tall white hat, offers a unique menu which features a plethora of healthy dishes, while also being mindful that many guests are on holiday therefore also providing a very decent selection of less healthy, but no less tasty dishes to suit all palates. What really stands out at Aleenta Retreat’s The Garden Restaurant, is its focus on produce. Salt is sourced from the ancient salt mines of Nan province, eggs are organic and found in Sankampaeng, fish sauce from a famous source in Sukhotai and seasonal produce is constantly added to the menu as they come and go.

Dishes which we highly recommend include:
Roasted Bone Marrow
An umami-filled marrow of Thai wagyu beef sprinkled with some larb spices for some local flavour. A freshly baked baguette is served alongside this lip-smacker of a dish.

Seared Farm-Raised Buffalo Tartare
A slightly-seared tartare of buffalo which arrives very tender and fresh. Served with all of the tartare accoutrements we all love so well.

Fragrant River Prawns
From Mae Sot, Tak province, this river prawn comes from Tak’s highlands and is served with a chef-inspired hor mok flavouring.

‘Chon’ White Fish Fillet a la Provençal
This is a hearty and healthy dish cooked with classic European techniques and served with local seasonal vegetables from the local Royal Projects.

Sous Vide Duck Khao Soi
This iconic egg noodle and curry dish is what Chiang Mai’s kitchens are famed for. Chef Arm however, has put his own unique spin on this classic dish and the duck is sous vide for eight hours in Chinese herbs before being fried and baked. Served sans soup, but tossed in the iconic curry, this dish is the perfect Chiang Mai bite.

Artisanal Burrata
This light bite is a whole new spin on the beloved cheese which is mozzarella on the outside and stracciatella on the inside. Mixed into a salad with local vegetables, this is burrata like you have never seen before.

Aleenta Poke Bowl
The bowl of wholesome goodness is one of the crown jewels in The Garden’s menu with salmon, tuna, salmon roe, edamame, avocados, mango and rice berry mixed with Japanese sesame sauce. Everything comes together in a bowl of healthy and tasty delight.

Chiang Rai Vanilla Mousse
The Garden sources its vanilla from a northern mountainous vanilla farm, the first in Thailand, creating an aromatic mousse served with sponge cake and home made jam.

Finish off your meal and head upstairs to the bar for some well deserved apres meal tipples. If you haven’t been to Aleenta Retreat yet, this is the reason to go check it out.
