Yum Yai Thai Salad

One Thai Royal dish is the Yum Yai Thai Salad, is seasoned with a distinctive taste of a Japanese soy sauce called shoyu, something the Thais called Num Pla Yee Poon in the past. Although containing no fish (so not actually a Num Pla), this soy sauce first appeared in a poem mentioning Yum Yai Thai Salad, written in Thailand during the reign of King Rama II.

Today, this seasoning is common in Thailand, making a firm mark on Thai cuisine. The obsession with shoyu later saw the introduction of other seasonings from Japan, such as MSG by way of Ajinomoto brand.
