According to a recent report by Numbeo, the largest crowd-sourced global database tracking crime and safety statistics, the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai has been ranked as the safest city in Southeast Asia and 31st safest in the world. Chiang Mai achieved a safety index of 75.5 and a crime index of 24.5. The safety index measures the perception of safety for walking alone during the day and night, while the crime index reflects the level of crime in a city.
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, took the top spot as the safest city globally with a crime index of 11.2 and a safety index of 88.8. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Caracas, Venezuela was ranked as the least safe city with a crime index of 83.6 and a safety index of 16.4.
Bangkok was ranked 7th in Southeast Asia with a safety index of 59.5 and a crime index of 40.5. The prime minister of Thailand, Prayut Chan-o-cha, has expressed gratitude to the government agencies responsible for maintaining safety and security across the country.
Some of the notable safe cities include Taiwan (ranked 1st in Asia and 3rd globally), Quebec City (the safest in North America and 6th globally), and San Sebastian, Spain (the safest city in Europe and 8th globally). In North America, the Los Angeles suburb of Irvine was ranked 26th.
