Why would a successful retailer of unique home furnishings liquidate her entire inventory?
To do that would require months of effort selling a huge inventory at prices that preclude profit. We asked Nok McPherson, owner of NK Bantawai in Hang Dong, that question. Her answer might surprise you.
When we interviewed Nok, she described NK Bantawai as “a source for unique home furnishings with a human touch. ‘We offer an alternative to factory-produced items sold in big-box stores and websites. Our style includes a rustic patina of age and character only found in handcrafted items.” Nok’s customers are a niche group who avoid mass-produced goods that now dominate the home furnishings world.
In 2014, Nok and her American husband launched NK Bantawai, a home furnishings importer sourcing treasures primarily from India plus locally sourced objects. The business was an instant success and has grown in scale and complexity during the past decade, now with 3 locations in Hang Dong, Chiang Mai.
The offerings at NK Bantawai range from newly produced items in a rustic colonial or ethnic style, repurposed items made from salvaged materials, one-of-a-kind antique or vintage wooden furniture, and soft goods with fantastic, colourful textiles. So, why liquidate?

What is being liquidated?
Nok has announced the start of a total liquidation to sell thousands of items from the current inventory with no exceptions. All in-stock merchandise will be sold at discounts starting at 30% off, and some items will be reduced up to 70%. Nok anticipates the sale will continue for several months due to the huge quantity of items in stock.
What next?
Plans are already being made to remodel the main showroom in Bantawai Village. Nok will also travel to search for fresh merchandise and reorder carefully chosen versions of her most successful categories from the past. Her customers can look forward to an exciting new look combined with upgraded versions of the original collection. A large-scale restructuring and upgrade to the original business structure, including a greatly improved fully functional website, are underway. NK Bantawai is also engaging in programmes to help those in need in the community.
