Cherry pulp from coffee beans is always an organic waste which farmers have to find a way to monetise, whether by turning to fertilizer or by other creative means. One Thai entrepreneur has taken this humble discarded pulp and turned it into an award-winning soda craft.
Castown Arabica Soda Craft is an alcohol-free Arabica flavoured soda which uses the craft beer technique. This intriguing drink recently won the IP Innovation Competition 2017 under the Food and Agricultural Products section by the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP).
Young entrepreneur Ratsaran Peerapongdecha spent years studying his passion, coffee. He went to the mountains of the north and traveling extensively to understand the business from one end to the other. During his travels he saw that farmers struggled with the cherry pulp waste and saw that some countries turned them into tea. But thinking that we live in a tropical climate, he wanted to produce something more refreshing than a hot drink so he decided to marry his love of coffee with his other passion, crafts beer.
His innovative new drink took much trial and error and he received help from marketeer and agricultural innovators Pananchai Klumklomchit and Nakarin Manaboon.
