Thais love football with a passion and, as you would expect, the Chiang Mai football scene is filled with fervid fans following both the national and local game.
Locally, attention focuses on the adventures of Chiangmai United (the club has undergone a series of name changes), the Lanna Tigers who play their home games at the 700 Year Stadium. Although the team are, at the time of writing, playing in Thai League Division 2 it commands a legion of loyal fans to cheer them on, including many in the expat community. Ticket prices to attend games are very reasonable (as low as 20 baht for under 15s), so if you love your football, go along and cheer them on.
The other aspect of football in Chaing Mai is following the international game. The English Premier League attracts an almost religious devotion from local fans, all of whom follow their favourite teams avidly. Almost every game is broadcast live in Thailand and many bars around town broadcast life to a rapt audience.
