Cobras Fall Short At TRU 7s Finals
Its always an honour to repressent your team and an even bigger honour to represent your province in any sport. Chiang Mai was well represented at the recent Thai Rugby Union National 7s finals held in Bangkok over the weekend of 11-13 October. With the Prince Royals College & Lanna Rugby Club in the age divisions and Lanna Lionesses teaming up with the Bangers Belles to compete in the womens along with the Chiang Mai Cobras in the mens Senior Opens divisions, Chiang Mai was well represented with up and coming talent.
The Cobras arrived in Bangkok on Friday evening 11 Oct to compete in the TRU Thailand National Rugby 7s tornament on Sunday 13th and Monday 14th October. They knew it would be a tough task being the only non Thai Military team in the tournament.
In Group A Cobras would play the Royal Thai Navy Chiang Rai who we faced recently in the TRU 7s qualifiers in Phitsanulok. A very quick and talented team with a few Chiang Mai lads in the squad. We would also face off against the experienced and seasoned 7s Royal Thai Air Force team. We have played with, and knew a few of these lads as well. First match was the days opening match kicking off at 09:00. Cobras started the first half strong, with Parn Natipong #parnnatipong scoring a brace of unconverted tries and went into halftime with a 10-0 lead. A very strong start. The Royal Thai Navy came back hard in the second half and scored a try through the middle with the conversion. 10-7, but Cobras defense stayed strong and at the final whistle it was a 10-7 win to the Cobras. A brilliant start to the day.
Next match was against the Royal Thai Air Force at 12:20. The RTAF struck first with a solid play and scored a second in the first half to lead 14-0 at half time, with the Cobras under pressure. The RTAF came out strong and another early try from the Air Force put them up 21-0 in the second half. The Cobras had not seen much ball but finally got possesion and managed to work some well executed phases to get Pudis Sangsuwan over the line. Conversion was good. Although the Cobras had the RTAF under pressure for the rest of the game, thier strong defensive lines held, to win 21-7.
Cobras were in to the Cup semi finals and would play Royal Thai Police 1. They are a great team with an enormous amount of talented Thai internationals and we were lighter on numbers as well. The Police started strong and were breaking the line repeatly by targeting the forwards and spreading the defensive line to strike quickly at any gaps. With an abundance of International talent the Police side were rampant, controlling the game and using their speed and technic to put the match to bed. The Cobras fought hard and never gave up and were rewarded at the finish with prop Pongporn “Folk” Piboonsri crashing through from five meters. Final score 42-5.
While this may not have been the fairytale ending Cobras may have hoped for it was indeed a tremendously rewarding experience for their young players and for the club. For a team that has only played a couple of 7s tournaments and only a few 7s training session, this gives us the opportunity to review plans, work on certain areas, and come back stronger and better next year.
The lads played with heart and never quit and one can be so very proud of their efforts. They showcased the talent that is currently coming through in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai in particular, which bodes well for the future. Chiang Mai Rugby is well and truely back on the map!
In the Junior divisions both the PRC & Lanna kids were outstanding and came home with some silverware.
Massive thanks to all our rugby families, friends, and supporters.
#princerugbyclub you have a great program and we are happy to help any way we can and Thonburi University who let Act and Nice play with us Sunday. To all our sponsors without your help we could not do Cobras Rugby.
Great to see the reach of PRC and Northern Thailand Rugby with CNX lads playing for Thamasat Uni, Chula Uni, Bangkok Uni as well with the Police, Navy and Air Force teams.
Special thanks to Thai Rugby Union for hosting this great event and allowing us to take part. And massive thanks to #donnasangsiri , your generous support made this possible. Much love ❤️ and respect from Cobras Rugby Club!!
