CityNews – A group of Chiang Mai-based veterinarians are currently assisting the Myanmar Veterinary Association in tackling Yangon’s massive stray dog problem.
The Myanmar Veterinary Association in cooperation with the UK based charity Worldwide Veterinary Service is currently conducting a pilot stray population control project in Hlaing Township. Four Thai and 12 vet nurses and support staff are deployed on this pilot mission with 12 members of the Myanmar Veterinary Association, who were trained by WVS Thailand vets, also participating.
One unsterilised stray can produce around 32,000 offspring in six years (theoretically up to twice that). Sterilisation also reduces the spread of infectious diseases, some of which are transmitted during mating or fighting over mates. The group will also vaccinate all sterilised dogs against rabies before release.
By using the latest high volume sterilisation protocols developed by WVS, the team of specialists expect to sterilise about 500 strays. Similar joint projects are planned for other townships and are expected to cover the entire Yangon metro area.
This pilot project, fully funded by WVS UK for this mission, which is also fundraising for additional clinics internationally, seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the latest surgical techniques, combined with state-of-the-art management tools, in humanely and efficiently controlling stray populations.
Should you wish to support this project, please earmark donations for Myanmar, as all other donations collected in Thailand go toward the Thai programmes which include the Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and free sterilisations and outreach within Thailand.
