A thief who had his face covered with a helmet entered the bank carrying a knife and a bag. He walked over to the bank’s employees and told them to hand over the money and not to sound the alarm or he would activate a bomb in his bag.

However, the employees ignored his requests, opened the cash drawers, took the money and fled to the secure back room.

The alarm was sounded and the thief escaped, driving a car with no licence plates.

Police tracked down the car using CCTV footage, and arrested the man who had hidden himself in an apartment block close to the Rajabhat University the next day.

He was identified as 22-year-old Pichet Boonwong, a second year university student.

Pichet told the police that he had lost money gambling and had pawned his gold necklace. He planned to steal the money to buy the necklace back. The car he used was a rental car.

Police took Pichet to re-enact the scene on February 26.
